Every autumn, the palace is the venue for the famous Mysore dussehra festival, during which leading artists perform on a stage set up in the palace grounds. On the tenth day of the festival Vijaya Dashami, a parade with caparisoned elephants and floats originate from the palace grounds.
The festival celebrates and commemorates the victory of the great Goddess Durga, also called Chamundeshwari, after she slew the demon Mahishasura, thereby symbolizing the triumph of good over evil according to Hindu mythology.

Karnataka plays a very big role in fighting great battles as the Mighty warrior Tippu sultan was ruling from Srirangapatnam close to Mysore. His last foot steps before dying are still marked on the roads, where he ran for his life out of a mosque in srirangapatnam.
The Mysore palace was left behind without being demolished as the king was a supporter of British. Where as tippu sultans territory was burned to ashes.
